Our First Meeting Was A Tremendous Success

Thank-you to everyone who participated in the first meeting of the International Sickle Cell Lung Collaborative and to all of the supporters who wished they were there.  We had almost 20 people from all over the nation and Jamaica present.  The discussions were easy and the enthusiasm palpable.

I'll post more about our discussions and our to do list by next week.  Also tune in for additional pages for member contact information and upcoming events.

Sickle Cell Lung Collaborative Meeting

Thank you to everyone for showing interest in a Sickle Cell Lung Collaborative.  This page will be a location for up-to-date information for the ATS 2012 meeting.  In the future we will have a website that will allow for dynamic interactions, organization of relevant information, posting of upcoming events and more.  I'm hoping that our group will build upon all of our individual strengths to create a better world for our patients with sickle cell anemia.

OBJECTIVES

At the conclusion of this session, the participant will be able to understand the discrepancies between various studies on lung function in sickle cell, learn and understand the role of asthma in sickle cell disease and become familiar with the pros and cons of oxygen therapy and systemic steroids in sickle cell.

The cardiopulmonary complications of Sickle Cell Disease (SCD) are the leading cause of mortality and account for a significant portion of the morbidity among the affected patients. Yet, there are still significant controversies regarding the exact effects of the disease on the lungs, about the need and type of diagnostic work-up and about the efficacy and safety of several of the currently used therapeutic interventions. The symposium reviews and discusses the most important of these controversies.
